Workmanship. Lumber shall be free of jagged edges and other defects that may cause injury. Boxes or parts of boxes shall be free of cracked, damaged, or broken fasteners. Points and heads of fasteners shall not protrude or project beyond the surface of the box or box part, as applicable. All boxes and box parts shall have square corners (90 degrees + 1 degree) with nails clinched 1/8 inch. Dimensional tolerances are + 1/8 inch length, width, and depth. Boxes shall not have any defects that affect serviceability.

Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable.

Phytosanitary Certification by U.S. Department of Agriculture is required. because of oak wilt disease, the European Economic Community (EEC) Directive 77/93 requires that American oak, chestnut, and other species be free of bark and that one of the following conditions be met.

(A) Wood has been square-edged so that no natural round surface tissues remain.

(B) The moisture content does not exceed 20 percent expressed as a percentage of the dry matter.

(C) Wood has been treated by hot air at 43 degrees C (109 degrees F) for 48 hours or 54 degrees C (129 degrees F) for 12 hours.

(D) Wood has been treated by hot water at 43 degrees C (109 degrees F) for 48 hours or 49 degrees C (120 degrees F) for 12 hours.

Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.

Notes. Purchasers should specify size, material, fasteners, and weight contents or material thicknesses that are required. Materials not specified are the option of the supplier.

When this commercial item description is used for procurement, the commercial item certification clause must appear in the solicitation.
