COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BOXES, SHIPPING, CORRUGATED FIBERBOARD
WEATHER RESISTANT, WAX-RESIN TREATED
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description for wax-resin treated boxes or sheets in lieu of Federal Specification PPP-B-1 163, class 11.
This description covers double wall corrugated boxes or sheets, wax-resin treated.
Salient characteristics:
Boxes or sheets shall be fabricated treated and is low water absorbing from unbleached kraft corrugated fiberboard, which has been wax-resin and double wall.
Size: As specified in the solicitation (see note (1)).
Class Weather resistant
Style: As specified: RSC, OSC, HSC, HSCS, DCC (see note (2), sheets.
Bursting strength: 350, 450, 600 pounds when tested in accordance with ASTM D 2738 (see note (3)).
Direction of flutes: Perpendicular to score lines or edge of the box opening.
Staple length: 1/2 inch + 1/32 inch minimum.
Staple thickness: 0.020 inch with minus tolerance of 0.001 inch.
Crown size: 3/8 inch + 1/16 inch.
Adhesive: Adhesive used to fabricate the fiberboard shall be water-resistant. Separation of components on unwaxed board shall not exceed 1/4 inch from the edge of the specimens when tested in accordance with ASTM D 1028.
Wax treatment: Wax treatment shall result in not less than 40 percent increase in basis weight when tested in accordance with ASTM D 590.

TAPPI T 402 - Conditioning Paper and Paper Board for Testing
ASTM D 590 - Petroleum Wax in Paper
ASTM D 1028 - Ply Separation (Wet) of Solid and Corrugated Fiberboard
ASTM D 2738 - Bursting Strength of Corrugated Board.
The issue of each TAPPI or ASTM test method in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practicable.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
