COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BOX, SHIPPING, CORRUGATED FIBERBOARD, HIGH COMPRESSION
STRENGTH, WEATHER RESISTANT, WAX-RESIN TREATED
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification PPP-B-1163, class I.
This description covers double wall corrugated boxes or sheets (weather resistant), wax-resin treated, high compression strength (primarily intended for shipping containers).
Salient characteristics.
Boxes or sheets shall be fabricated from unbleached kraft corrugated fiberboard which has been wax-resin treated and is low water absorbing and double wall.
Size: As specified in the solicitation (see note (1)).
Class: Weather resistant, high compression strength.
Style: As specified: RSC, OSC, HSC, HSCS, DCC (see note (2)) sheets.
Conditioning for testing: Test samples shall-be in accordance with ASTM D 685
Bursting strength: 275 or 350 pounds when tested in accordance with ASTM D 2738 (see note (3)).
Direction of flutes: Perpendicular to score lines or edge of the box opening.
Staple length: 1/2 inch + 1/16 inch minimum.
Staple thickness: 0.020 inch with minus tolerance of 0.001 inch.
Crown size: 3/8 inch + 1/16 inch.
Adhesive: Adhesive used to fabricate the fiberboard shall be water-resistant. Separation of components on unwaxed board shall not exceed 1/4 inch from the edge of the specimens when tested in accordance with ASTM D 1028.
Wax treatment: Wax treatment shall result in not less than 40 percent increase in basis weight when tested in accordance with ASTM D 590.

The issue of each ASTM test method in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practicable.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
