COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BOX, SHELF, STATIONARY STORAGE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification PPP-B-665D, style J, class 2.
1. SCOPE:
This description covers the requirements for reusable, heavy duty paperboard, metal stayed boxes (see figure I).
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:
2.1 The boxes shall be furnished in the sizes specified below. Measurements are outside dimensions with lids in place. A tolerance of +/- 3.2 mm (1/8 inch) will be permitted in the outside dimension and inside depth of lid, provided such tolerance variations are compatible with related members of the box assembly. There shall be enough clearance to lift lid properly.

2.2 Unless otherwise specified, paperboard shall be 2.286 mm (0.090”) +/- 0.1143 mm (0.0045”) thick and shall have a minimum dry bursting strength of 3102 kPa (450 p.s.i.) and minimum wet bursting strength of 1034 kPa (150 p.s.i.) Thickness tests shall be in accordance with TAPPI T 411, and bursting strength tests in accordance with TAPPI T 810.
2.3 Metal stays shall be manufactured of cold rolled steel. The stays shall be 25.3 mm (0.995”) minimum, with a thickness of 0.2 mm (0.008”) minimum. Coating shall be at least one side enamel, in color lusterless forest green. The stays and enamel shall be capable of bending for application without fracturing. The stays shall have a minimum of two four-prong eyelets per inch of length. The stays shall be oriented and secured on box joints as indicated in figure 1, so that the maximum number of eyelets are applied.
